BITREALM

Software that ships.

Hi, I'm Matt Beisser. I'm a staff software engineer who has been shipping C++ since 2008 and Rust for the last few years, mostly on embedded and performance-critical systems.

Bitrealm LLC is how I contract that work out.
Taking on part-time and project work.
Remote from Orlando, Eastern time.

Embedded and systems code

I write C++ and Rust on Linux, from device modules and packet processing to the build systems behind it. I've ported firmware from RTOS to Yocto and moved a million-line codebase across four compiler generations.

Safety-critical and regulated

Software has to satisfy an auditor, not just a compiler. I built production lidar software with ISO 26262 verification evidence and Automotive SPICE process work ahead of an audit. I've also written fuel distribution software governed by custody transfer and weights-and-measures law.

Testing and verification

Production code requires evidence that it works. The right level of testing depends on the project, and I've delivered at every level: unit and integration tests, full line and branch coverage, and performance benchmarks on real hardware.

Context-driven engineering

There’s no one-size-fits-all process. Whether a project is in early-stage R&D or navigating DoD-grade rigor, I match the process to the problem. Estimates come with clear reasoning, and I use small prototypes to test assumptions before committing to an architecture.

Where the
experience
comes from

Luminar Technologies, 2021 - 2025
Staff software engineer building lidar software for the Volvo EX90. I owned two core modules, including the design, testing, and ISO 26262 ASIL B verification evidence, then led a four-person team building a diagnostic data platform in Rust.

Toptech Systems, 2012 - 2021
Nine years on a million-line C++ product that runs fuel terminals for ExxonMobil, Shell, TransMontaigne, and others. I shipped customer features to dozens of sites, ran design reviews, and helped port Toptech's load rack controller from a real-time OS to Linux.

Lockheed Martin, 2008 - 2012
Wrote constructive simulation software for US Army and Marine Corps training programs, my first job out of school.
